Ideas on Consciousness

About Us

Ideas on Consciousness provides a space for students to nurture their interest in and understanding of the science and philosophy of consciousness. The club hosts weekly discussions on primary scientific literature and book chapters on the nature of consciousness in order to foster scientific thinking in its members. It endeavors to incite interest and conversation among the larger UC Berkeley community through public panel discussions among experts in fields including but not limited to: neuroscience, philosophy, linguistics and religious studies.

Shelden Shi

Co-President
shelden@berkeley.edu

Hi I'm Shelden. I double majoring Computer Science and Cognitive Science (with an emphasis on Computational Modeling and Neuroscience). I am interested in anything that is brain related.

Hrach Asmerian

Co-President
hrach.asmerian@berkeley.edu

My name is Hrach Asmerian and I am an undergraduate studying Molecular and Cell Biology, Neurobiology here at UC Berkeley. I hope to enter a PhD program in Neuroscience after graduation and go into education or join the biotechnology industry. I am particularly interested in the intersection of philosophy of mind, neurobiology, and the mechanisms of conscious perception. When I am not in my studies you can find me skateboarding, debating about consciousness, or learning to play Bob Dylan songs on my guitar.

Alexander Dryland

Director of Curriculum Development
adryland@berkeley.edu

Hello I’m Alex! I’m a second-year with an intended major in Public Health and minor in Food Systems, on the pre-medical route here at Cal. I particularly enjoy discussing the neural correlates of consciousness, but am fascinated in any other brain-related conversation! In my free time, I love listening to podcasts, cooking, and doing calisthenics. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about our club.

Shine Lee

btgold@berkeley.edu

Hi, I’m Shine! I’m a first-year in the Society and Environment major at UC Berkeley, and I’m also interested in pursuing either Cognitive Science or Public Health. I love playing music (violin and piano, currently learning the sax), basketball, and chess (I’m always down for a round on chess.com), and I’m endlessly fascinated by any and all questions related to the human experience.

Beata Gold

btgold@berkeley.edu

Hi! I’m Beata, a second year majoring in Cognitive Science. I run track and cross country, I love being outside, and reading. I enjoy discussing trippy thought experiments and philosophy so feel free to reach out!

Akshaj Joshi

Alumnus
akshaj@berkeley.edu

Hi, I'm Akshaj! I study neurobiology and Mandarin Chinese at Cal. I thoroughly enjoy learning languages and I've been getting into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lately. I'm enthralled by the gap between particles functioning in our brains through mechanisms we can understand and the qualia that we experience daily. Feel free to email me.

At IOC, we explore ideas on consciousness.
